Lars assumed Skywalker had perished as a result of his Jedi duties. Therefore the farmer barred Kenobi from visiting or training Luke. Lars kept Luke occupied with farm chores in the years that followed, keeping him from learning the truth about his father.

Stormtroopers followed the droid to Lars’ house, where they interrogated and executed him and his wife. Skywalker fled Tatooine with Kenobi to train as a Jedi after discovering his family had been murdered. Eventually joining the Rebel Alliance and destroying the Death Star in the Battle of Yavin.
