R2-D2 (Artoo-Detoo) is a fictional robot character created by George Lucas for the Star Wars franchise. He has appeared in eleven of the twelve Star Wars films that have been released to far. Besides, R2, an astromech droid, is a companion to C-3PO; Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker; and Obi-Wan Kenobi at various stages throughout the movie. With the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story; R2-D2 and his friend C-3PO are the only characters to feature in every theatrical Star Wars film (2018).

The droid, R2-D2 played by English actor Kenny Baker in all three original Star Wars films; and got billing credit for the role in the prequel trilogy; where Baker’s role decreased as R2-D2 primarily portrayed by radio operated props and CGI models. Furthermore, Baker recognised as a consultant for The Force Awakens in the sequel trilogy; but Jimmy Vee also co-performed the part in various instances.

Then again, Beginning with The Last Jedi, Vee takes over the job. Hassan Taj and Lee Towersey, puppeteers, play R2-D2 in The Rise of Skywalker; replacing Jimmy Vee, who played the character in the previous two films. Ben Burtt, a sound designer, developed his sounds and vocal effects.

Also, Ralph McQuarrie created the artwork for R2-D2; which co-developed by John Stears and manufactured by Peteric Engineering. Tony Dyson and his White Horse Toy Company created the fibreglass shells for the Empire Strikes Back droids.
