Authentic Phil Brown autographs.

Philip Mortimer Brown (April 30, 1916 – February 9, 2006) was an American actor who played; Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen Lars in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Browns acting career extended back to the 1930’s, including stage and film roles. In the 1950’s, he blacklisted during the McCarthy era, despite the fact that he was never a member of the Communist Party. Unable to find work in Hollywood due to the unfounded accusations; he relocated his family to England, where he built a successful acting and directing career over the next forty years.

Phil Brown was cast by George Lucas in the role of Uncle Owen for Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope after he responded to a casting call in the U.K. seeking actors with strong American accents.

Furthermore, after returning to the U.S. in 1993, Brown was a popular figure at conventions; including Celebration II where he was able to meet Joel Edgerton, who played Owen Lars in Episodes II and III. He retired from acting and directing due to his declining health; and died of pneumonia in 2006 at the age of 89.

Additionally, in the prequel films, Owen is the son of Cliegg Lars and stepbrother of Anakin Skywalker. He and his wife Beru take custody of Luke at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
